My Top 4 Reasons Why You Should Absolutely Have An Engagement Shoot

Engagement photography in Sussex England

Engagement shoots have become more and more popular and pretty much every photographer, me included, will recommend one. I also know, I’d be a very rich woman if I got a pound every time someone told me they hate having their picture taken! So why would you want to spend more time in front of my camera? Here are the some of the many reasons why an engagement shoot is right for you and will make your wedding day photos even better.

1. You‘ll get used to the camera

The last thing I want you feeling on your wedding day is nervous and dreading seeing me and my camera. You may have even looked at Insta, and thought I’ll never look like that, I’ll be all awkward and stiff. I know you 100% will not be either of those things and you will look amazing in your wedding photos, and an engagement shoot is my opportunity to not just tell you but show that it's true. It’s practise for you in front of the camera and it’s you experiencing how I work and realising how super laid-back and fun taking professional photos can be. It’s an hour and half(ish) of couple’s portraits that make you realise that the 30 minutes(ish) on your wedding day are going to be a breeze. It’s a confidence builder that will only ever make your wedding photos even better, and the experience of having them taken on your day nothing but pure fun without any nerves in sight. And if it makes you feel any better, I get myself into some very strange positions getting the best possible angles for you, so you are free to laugh at my scrambling into ditches and inevitable muddy knees.

2. You get to see my smiling face : )

You found me, we met and chatted all things wedding planning and then you booked me, a year, even two years in advance of your wedding. That’s a long time to go without seeing each other again. An engagement shoot is our opportunity to really start to get to know one another. I am the person you spend the most time with on your wedding day (sorry!) and I am there for all the intimate moments, close enough to hear the whispered words shared between you. I don’t want you to feel like there’s a stranger at your wedding day. I want my face at your day to be a comforting one, to feel like a friend you would want to share those special moments with. An engagement shoot is about building that bond between us all. And it really helps me get to know you both, what makes you laugh and how you interact as a couple: knowledge that will mean I can make sure your wedding photos will be absolutely epically you. Plus, it’s a great opportunity for us to catch up on how your planning has been going and if you have any logistical issues your trying to make work, talking them through with someone impartial who goes to a lot of weddings (me!) might be just what you need to figure them out. I am always happy to offer help and advice on your timelines, and an engagement shoot is a really organic time to have these conversations. I am here to help, or just lend an ear, whichever you need. Either way, at the end of your engagement session, we'll all know each other a little better, you'll know my cameras about as scary as I am (not at all!) and we will have shared a fun few hours capturing beautiful and romantic photos just for you. Perfect.

3. You’ll have photos you cherish and it’s fun!

Most likely, the majority of your photos of the two of you up until this point, will be some phone selfies and maybe one or two taken on a friend’s phone that time you got dressed up for something. Your engagement photos are going to be something else entirely – a rare opportunity to have some professional photographs that are natural, beautiful and romantic, and all about the two of you and nothing else. Wedding day photos, even those at days designed to be super relaxed and non-traditional, are still restricted by the many elements that go into the day, such as wanting to be mingling with your guests or needing to go in for dinner – the photos aren’t the only priority on day and nor should they be. But that’s the beauty of an engagement shoot, it’s a chance for you to spend a few hours with your best friend (and me), laughing, smiling and generally having a great time, with zero distractions or commitments - precious alone time that is hard to come by when your planning a wedding! You can even use some of your pics in your wedding planning – your save the date perhaps? It is also a great opportunity to reminisce about your relationship together – let us go to the spot you proposed or capture you exchanging the gorgeous rings you designed for each other. There is a unique freedom to an engagement shoot that is destined to be taken advantage of - getting married in summer but you've always loved the autumn leaves? We'll do your shoot then! Love sunsets but you're getting married in winter so will be eating whilst it's setting? Let's have a spring golden hour engagement shoot! Professional, personal photos that are all about the awesome couple you are, what’s not to love?!

Your engagement shoot will leave you feeling more confident and comfortable in front of a camera, which means your photos on the day are going to rock. Me being close, camera in hand, won’t make you feel nervous, as you’ll know you can trust that I’ve got this and I won't fee like a stranger. You’ll look forward to your couple’s portraits because you’ll know how fun they will be. You’ll know we will nail romantic without the cheesiness. You’ll know you can laugh your way through couples’ photos because laughter from excited nerves is infectious and will create heartfelt authentic moments that I will capture for you. Your wedding gallery will be all the genuine, relaxed and beautiful moments combining to tell the unique story of your day, captured by your very own laid-back, fun and creative friend/wedding photographer, who really gets you as a couple.
